Appointment of Interim Commissioner for Children and Young People Ros Cornish

With pleasure, I have accepted my appointment as Interim Commissioner for Children and Young People. I bring to this role more than forty years’ of early childhood education sector and leadership experience.

Former Interim Commissioner for Children and Young People Isabelle Crompton’s term of appointment concluded 31 March 2026. During her time in this role, Ms Crompton served as a strong and effective advocate for the rights and wellbeing of children and young people across Tasmania.

Immediately prior to my commencement, Tasmania’s Disability Commissioner, Catherine Whitington, undertook the functions of the Interim Commissioner for Children and Young People (in conjunction with her own functions) to ensure continuity until 12 April 2026. I thank Ms Whitington for her support.

A process, led by the Department of Justice, is underway to appoint a new Commissioner for Children and Young People following the passage of the Commission for Children and Young People Act 2025 (the Act).

It is my expectation I will remain in this role until 7 July 2026, or until the process to appoint a new Commissioner under the Act is finalised.

During my appointment, I look forward to supporting the hard-working and committed staff of the Office of the Commissioner for Children and Young People, and to engaging with, and advocating for, Tasmania’s children and young people.
