Statement on appointment of next Commissioner for Children and Young People

I welcome today’s announcement that Sonya Pringle-Jones has been appointed Tasmania’s next Commissioner for Children and Young People, under the Commission for Children and Young People Act 2025 (the Act).

Their term as Commissioner begins tomorrow, Thursday 8 October, coinciding with the commenced operations of the new Commission for Children and Young People described by the Act.

Tasmania was one of the first Australian jurisdictions to appoint a Commissioner for Children, in October 2000. The new Commission will build on this 26-year-history, carrying responsibility for a wide range of functions and powers that further strengthen Tasmania’s child protection oversight system, while advocating for children and young people’s rights and wellbeing.

It has been my pleasure to serve Tasmanian children and young people, and I wish Commissioner Pringle-Jones the very best as they settle into their vitally important role leading the new Commission.

Ros Cornish AM
Interim Commissioner for Children and Young People
