Film highlights benefits of listening to children and young people Film Launch NW Coast

The Commissioner for Children and Young People invites the Tasmanian media to the launch of a new short film that has been co-designed, filmed and produced by members of the Commissioner’s 2018 Children and Young People Consultative Council in collaboration with Big hART and young women from Project O.

The short film highlights how children and young people’s unique experiences, knowledge and perspectives can inform decision makers.

“It is fitting this film will be launched in the month when members of Tasmania’s House of Assembly return to Parliament for the first time this year,” Commissioner Leanne Mclean said.

“We want to ensure that the voices of children and young people are heard in decisions that affect them – in all aspects of their lives.

“It is extremely important that our political leaders listen to children and young people and give due weight to their views.”

The 46 members of the state-wide Consultative Council worked with arts and social change organisation Big hART to produce the two-minute short film, highlighting the benefits of involving children and young people in decision making.

Ms McLean said the 46 members of the Consultative Council were aged between 9 and 17 years.

“Big hART developed the script for the film in consultation with Council members. Council Members created out-of-session video content for the film and young women from Big hART’s Project O in Wynyard assisted with the editing process.”
