The Commissioner for Children and Young People Leanne McLean today welcomed the Tasmanian Government’s announcement to combine Tasmania’s government services supporting children and families into a single department.
“This is a unique opportunity to create a more child-centred service system, and, if properly implemented and funded, will lead to improved and enduring wellbeing outcomes for Tasmania’s children and young people,” Ms McLean said.
“Integration of services and collaborative approaches to improving the wellbeing of our children, young people and their families are critical.
“They can help to ensure that issues are identified as early as possible, and that appropriate supports can be put in place.”
Ms McLean said that she received a briefing from Premier Peter Gutwein on the decision earlier today.
“The Premier has asked that I play an oversight and advisory role during the transition period and I have agreed to this request.
“My focus in this role will be ensuring the rights and best interests of Tasmanian children and young people are at the centre of the implementation and that, going forward, their voices are heard in policy decisions impacting their lives and futures.”
