A Mountain of Voices and On the Record

On Wednesday 26 November 2025, the Interim Commissioner for Children and Young People, Isabelle Crompton, attended Government House for a celebration of the A Mountain of Voices project including the unveiling of a new artwork, On the Record.

A Mountain of Voices (the Mountain) – an interactive public artwork created in partnership with Tasmanian arts organisation Terrapin – has toured Tasmania throughout 2025, visiting schools in Glenorchy, New Norfolk, Ulverstone, and George Town.

“240 young people engaged with the Mountain artwork during workshops facilitated by Terrapin, and shared messages with decision makers about what they want them to know and act on,” said Interim Commissioner for Children and Young People, Isabelle Crompton.

The Mountain artwork was displayed at this special celebration hosted by Her Excellency, the Honourable Barbara Baker AC, Governor of Tasmania, where the contribution of young participants was acknowledged and amplified.

During the event Her Excellency unveiled a companion artwork, On the Record, created by artist K Verrell and produced by Terrapin, which contains audio recordings of messages from young people.

On the Record is to be received by the State Archives of Tasmania, with that organisation staging a tour of the artwork to libraries around Tasmania in the future.

“This celebration acknowledged children and young people’s right to have a say about the matters that affect their lives,” Ms. Crompton said.

Her Excellency thanked all the young people who shared their views and ideas as the Mountain visited schools around the State.

“Children and young people are the future of Tasmania and it is vital for all adults to listen to them and act on what we hear,” Her Excellency said.

K Verrell has also created a ‘zine’ documenting the messages shared by young people which was distributed at the event and, later in the year, the Office of the Commissioner for Children and Young People will release an illustrated account of the project titled A Mountain of Voices: The Story. These and further resources relating to the Mountain will be made available at www.childcomm.tas.gov.au/VTY.
