Making Rights Real

In Tasmania, the Commissioner for Children and Young People is responsible for advocating for the rights, safety and wellbeing of all children and young people in the state. While there are many ways the Commissioner advocates on behalf of children and young people, they always ensure they observe the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

You can learn more about the UNCRC and other important conventions that describe the rights of children and young people, here.

Building on the work of former Commissioners, the Interim Commissioner has developed a child rights-based approach to monitoring and evaluating how well the rights of children and young people are upheld.

This new approach, Making Rights Real, is intended to ensure:

  1. children and young people are supported to claim their rights
  2. the government is supported to help realise its obligations to respect, protect and fulfil child rights.

A copy of the Making Rights Real Conceptual Plan is available to download below.

The Office of the Commissioner is now working on implementing the conceptual plan, and will begin working with children and young people, and the government to begin monitoring the realisation of children’s rights.

A child-friendly resource to help inform children and young people about the new program, and child rights is also available below. The Office of the Commissioner is excited to work with children and young people from across Tasmania and will be regularly seeking expressions of interest through the Your Engagement Place program.

If you’re someone that works with children and young people and would like more information about Making Rights Real, or to speak about ways you or children and young people can contribute to the monitoring program, please contact our office.
