The Acting-Commissioner for Children and Young People Isabelle Crompton today welcomed the State Government’s consultation on a Draft Bill to establish the new Commission for Children and Young People.
“The Commissioner for Children and Young People has long advocated for the Government to establish a new, strengthened Commission,” Ms Crompton said.
“The new Commission should have additional functions and powers to provide child-centred and independent oversight and advocacy for children and young people in Tasmania.
“The Commissioner has long advocated for additional functions including:
- Independent advocacy for children and young people in out of home care
- A Commissioner for Aboriginal Children and Young People.”
Ms Crompton said she will carefully consider the Bill and will engage with children, young people and others to inform feedback to Government.
“This is an opportunity to build on the Commissioner’s existing role to establish a new one-stop-shop for protecting children’s safety and wellbeing that is nation leading.
“We will work constructively with the Government to make sure this vision is realised.”
Ms Crompton stressed that until the new Commission is fully established, the existing functions of the Commissioner, including advocacy for children in youth detention, will continue.
Have your say!The Acting Commissioner wants to know what Tasmanian children and young people think about the establishment of a new Commission for Children and Young People, and will soon share details about an opportunity for them to have their say. |
